A special state primary election was held Tuesday, May 2 to fill the 9th Suffolk District representative vacancy due to the resignation of former Representative Jon Santiago (D). Santiago left his position in March when Governor Maura Healey named him secretary of Veteran's Services.

According to unofficial election results, Democrat John Moran won the primary with 1,751 votes. Moran was the only remaining Democratic candidate after Amparo "Chary" Ortiz, suspended her campaign.

The general election will happen on May 30. Moran does not have a Republican challenger. Moran will become the first out LGBTQ+ person to represent this district.
